About

Who We Are

The Ohoopee Angels are a musical duo made up of Amanda Edwards and Dawn Phillips. Amanda and Dawn have been friends as well as music collaborators for over 14 years. They cover several genres of music including classic country, modern country, bluegrass, blues, classic rock, and southern rock. Their vocal harmonies are sweet and blend into one voice. Amanda’s powerful, smoky voice has been described as Patsy Cline wrapped in Bonnie Raitt. The two together produce tight, crisp harmonies. Both are previous members of the Double Eagle Band who won Traditional Artist of the year in 2018 at the Georgia Country Awards. Amanda was the lead singer of Double Eagle and Dawn played pedal steel, bass, and rhythm guitar and also sang. Dawn is one of the organizers and managers of The Music Showcase Swainsboro, an event held semi-annually in Swainsboro, GA. The show features local talent and is a fundraiser for the local American Legion. Dawn also plays pedal steel in the Showcase Band. Amanda is a regular performer at the Music Showcase Swainsboro. These two will have you up dancing and tapping your toes then playing a slow ballad that will stir your soul. They perform at venues in Southeast Georgia. Their central location is Vidalia, GA.

How We Got Our Name

Dawn and Amanda hang out around the Ohoopee river near Vidalia, GA. There are several musicians that gather up at various places on the weekends and jam. Carlton (Curly) McCleod is one of those musicians and he has an annual music festival called Curlyfest. The festival started as a birthday party for Curly several years ago and has grown to around 1000 attendees. Curly asked Dawn and Amanda to perform at Curlyfest and they didn’t have a name. As Curly was opening the festival, he was naming the performers and completely off the cuff he said the Ohoopee Angels, Dawn and Amanda, will be performing later today. The name stuck. Dawn said, “although it is spelled and pronounced as Oh-hoop-ee, most locals simply call it “Hoopee.”
